Caleya

Caleya is a top-down sweater knitted in the round, without seam. It has a traditional raglan-sleeve construction and the front raglan “seams” are formed by a ribbed panel that goes all the way down the body, gradually turning in towards the middle at the end. It comes in 9 sizes for men and 9 sizes for women. “Caleya” is the name for a narrow lane in a village in the dialect spoken in Asturias, the northern Spanish region where I was born.

MATERIALS

• 4 mm (US 6) circular needles. Adjust if necessary to achieve gauge – see below.
  
• 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles or two sizes smaller than the main needles for the ribbing.
  
• 7 stitch markers. Stitch markers are labelled A to F, plus the BOR marker, to help you keep track of the shaping. I recommend using different colour markers so you can identify them easily, particularly when working the initial short rows. Removable markers for the sleeve decreases.
  
• Tapestry needle and waste yarn or extra cables to put the sleeve stitches on hold.

If you have followed any of my men’s patterns before, please pay attention to the sizes as they have changed. I have added a new size (the smallest) so check all the measurements carefully before choosing your size.

GAUGE

18 stitches and 26 rounds in 10 cm / 4 inches in stockinette stitch with the larger needles, after blocking.

of DK or worsted weight yarn. I used Xolla Bauma (100% Ripollesa wool, 125 m / 139 yd in 50 g) in the Falguera colourway (green) for the women’s version and Marina colourway (blue) for the men’s version.

Optional: in the men’s version I cast on and worked the first two rounds in a contrast colour. I did the same for the last 2 rounds and the bind off of the body and sleeves.
