Andecha is an Asturian word (the dialect from the northern Spanish region where I’m from). It’s used to denote a group of neighbours who would traditionally take turns to help each other out working the fields, making it more of a social occasion.
The Andecha shawl has a triangular shape with a traditional feather-and-fan pattern made of very simple increases and decreases. It’s a very simple and intuitive pattern suitable for beginners.
MATERIALS
- 4 mm (US 6) circular needles, 80cm long (If doing the Fingering version: 3.5 mm / US 4)
- 4 markers: two in colour A and two in colour B
YARN
The original shawl was designed with sport-weight yarn but notes have now been added to the pattern to adapt it to fingering-weight yarn.
Sport-weight yarn in 3 colours
- Main colour (MC): 550 m. I used Walcot Yarns Opus, colour Grey.
- Contrast colour 1 (CC1): 35 m. I used Walcot Yarns Opus, colour Cranberry (pink).
- Contrast colour 2 (CC2): 65 m. I used Walcot Yarns Opus, colour Cinnabar (orange).
Fingering version:
- Main colour (MC): 700 m
- Contrast colour 1 (CC1): approx. 70 m
- Contrast colour 2 (CC2): approx. 50 m
GAUGE
19 stitches and 24 rows in 10cm in stockinette stitch, after blocking.
Gauge is not that important in this pattern but may affect the amount of yarn you need.
DIMENSIONS
The final dimensions of the shawl (after blocking) are approximately 180cm width x 76cm length (measured along the centre/spine of the shawl).
