Arbeyal is a top-down fingering-weight vest. First, the top part of the back is knitted flat, then stitches are picked up along one shoulder to knit one side of the front and then the other, joining them together when the lower neck is reached. When both back and front reach the underarm, they’re are joined to start knitting the body in the round. Finally, stitches are picked up around the armholes and neck to work the ribbing.

The vest has stripes in two colours with the ribbing in a contrasting colour, although, of course, this can be altered to your taste. It can also be knitted in linen or cotton for a summery version (see the orange version in the photo gallery).

MATERIALS

  • 3.5 mm (US 4), 80 cm / 32” long circular needles for the body. Adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the same gauge as the pattern – see below.
  • 3 mm (US 2 1⁄2), 40-60 cm / 16-24” long circular needles (or two sizes smaller than the main needles).
  • Markers (some of them removable), tapestry needle, and scrap yarn, spare cables or stitch holders for placing stitches on hold.

SIZES

1 (2, 3, 4) [5, 6, 7]

How to choose your size: measure your bust circumference, add the ease recommended below (i.e. 5–10 cm / 2–4 inches) and find the finished circumference at bust measurement below that is closest to that figure. For men, I would recommend you choose the closest size to the shoulder width measurement instead, without adding any ease – then check the chest measurement still fits well. Make sure your gauge matches the one given below to ensure your finished garment will be the same dimensions.

DIMENSIONS

Finished circumference at bust:
82.5 (92, 102.5, 112) [122.5, 132, 142.5] cm
33.5 (36.75, 41, 45.25) [49.5, 52.75, 57] inches

Ease: + 5–10 cm / 2–4 inches

Finished shoulder width (inc. ribbing):
36.5 (37.5, 39, 40) (42, 42.5, 44.5) cm
14.25 (14.75, 15.25, 15.75) (16.5, 16.75, 17.5) inches

GAUGE

23 stitches and 31 rows in 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch with the larger needles, worked flat, after blocking.
