Bruga

Bruga means “cool breeze” in Asturian (the dialect from the northern Spanish region where I was born), and this cardigan seems perfect for such an occasion. The Bruga Cardigan is very lightweight, with a loose fabric, and 3/4 length sleeves. It is knitted from the top down, working the button bands simultaneously with the rest of the body. The sleeves feature a simple and easy-to-memorize lace pattern. It can be knitted with any yarn weight, from fingering to bulky – the only difference will be how transparent and lightweight the fabric turns out.

MATERIALS

• Main needles: 6 mm (US 10) circular needles for the body and sleeves. Adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the same gauge as the pattern – see below.
  
• Ribbing needles: 5 mm (US 8) circular needles (or two sizes smaller than the main needles).
  
• Button band needles: 3 double-pointed needles, short circulars, or even interchangeable needles without the cable, 8 mm (US 11) (or 2 sizes larger than the main needles).
  
• Markers, tapestry needle, and scrap yarn or stitch holder for placing stitches on hold.

You can use yarn of any weight, from fingering to bulky, as long as it matches the indicated gauge. The only difference will be how dense or sheer the final fabric turns out.

For the dark pink version I used DK weight yarn: Rowan Fine Tweed Haze (37% alpaca, 37% wool, 13% polyamide, 9% cotton, 4% polyester, 215 m en 50 g) in the colourway Rose 003.

For the light pink version I used fingering yarn: Xolla Pastoreta (100% woollen spun wool, 200 m in 50 g) in the Matafoc colourway.

How to choose your size: measure your bust circumference, add the ease recommended below (i.e. 20-25 cm / 8-10 inches) and find the finished circumference at bust measurement below that is closest to that figure. Make sure your gauge matches the one given below to ensure your finished garment will be the same dimensions.

13 stitches and 20 rows in 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch with the main needles, worked flat, after blocking.
