The Tazones hat is a traditional ribbed beanie knitted with DK-weight wool. You can make it in various colours (perfect for using up leftover yarn) or in a single colour. The brim is worked in a 2x2 rib, while the rest of the hat is knitted in a 1x1 rib. It’s the perfect gift, as it adapts to different head sizes, is super quick to make, and is a timeless classic loved by everyone. Tazones is a small fishing village in Asturias.

MATERIALS

  • 4 mm (US 6) needles, either 40 cm / 16 in long or 80 cm / 32 in long (if using the magic loop method) or double-pointed needles. Adjust the needle size if necessary to match the gauge specified below.
  • 7 stitch markers plus a different marker for the beginning of round, tapestry needle.

SIZES

1–3 years (4–7 years, 8–11 years, adult)

YARN

DK-weight yarn in three colours. I used WoolDreamers Mota (50% wool, 50% merino, 230 m / 252 yards per 100 g).

  • Colour 1 (C1): 55 (70, 85, 100) m / 60 (77, 93, 109) yards. I used shade 953G (yellow).
  • Colour 2 (C2): 8 (9, 11, 12) m / 9 (10, 12, 13) yards. I used shade 800 (natural).
  • Colour 3 (C3): 36 (41, 45, 60) m / 39 (45, 49, 66) yards. I used shade 201 (grey).

If you want to knit the hat in a single colour, you’ll need approximately 100 (120, 140, 170) m / 109 (131, 153, 186) yards.

GAUGE

22 stitches and 24 rounds in 10 cm /4 in of 1x1 rib after blocking.
