Payares is a relaxed, raglan-sleeve jumper knitted in the round from the neck down. It has a mock turtle neck but the pattern includes directions so you can easily change it to a shorter round neck. After the neckline, short rows are added to raise the back and increases are worked at either side of the sleeves. Then the sleeves and body are separated. You continue working on the body and later pick up the stitches left on hold for the sleeves and knit those from the underarm to the cuff. Choose four colours of sport-weight yarn to make a fun and relaxed sweater that will become a favourite this season. Payares is the word for November in the dialect of the northern Spanish region where I was born.

MATERIALS

  • 4 mm (US 6) circular needles for the ody and sleeves. Adjust size if necessary to achieve gauge.
  • 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles for the ribbing (or 2 sizes smaller than the main needles).
  • 8 markers in 4 different colours (A-D) for the raglan increases and a special marker for BOR. Removable markers for the sleeve decreases.
  • Tapestry needle and waste yarn or extra cables to put the sleeve stitches on hold.
