Los Sporty

Los Sporty are short socks worked from the toe up. They feature ergonomic toes designed to better fit the natural shape of the foot, a ribbed arch support section for a snug fit around the foot, a mini-gusset to add extra room where it’s needed most, German short-row heels and, finally, a heel tab at the back of the ankle to help prevent rubbing. The design is finished with a small duplicate stitch motif embroidered onto the heel tab. The socks come in three sizes for different foot widths and can easily be adapted to any shoe size using the tables provided in the pattern.

MATERIALS

• 2.25mm (US 1) circular needles, either 80 cm / 32” long (if you use the magic loop method), or 23 cm / 9” long (if you prefer short circulars) or DPNs (double-pointed needles). If you use short circular needles you’ll still need a long circular needle or DPNs for casting on and the toe increases until you have enough stitches to work comfortably on a shorter needle.
• 3 markers (one of them removable), tapestry needle.

YARN

Fingering or light fingering weight yarn (400-425 m / 437-465 yards per 100 g). I used Yarnity Minis (100% merino, 88 m / 96 yards in 20 g).

The amount of yarn you’ll need will depend on your sock and shoe size. As an example, for a size M (see under Sizes below), UK6 / EU39 shoe size I used the amounts given in brackets below.

• Main colour (CP) for the main part of the sock: 75-130 m / 82-142 yd. (EUR 39, size M: 95 m / 104 yd)
• Colour 1 (C1) for the toe and heel: 35-60 m / 39-66 yd. (EUR 39, size M: 43 m / 47 yd)
• Colour 2 (C2) for 2 stripes and part of the ribbing: 25-40 m / 18-44 yd. (EUR 39, size M: 28 m / 31 yd)
• Colour 3 (C3) for one stripe and the ankle tab:
  35-60 m / 39-66 yd. (EUR 39, size M: 42 m / 46 yards)

GAUGE

8 stitches and 12 rows in 2.5 cm / 1”.

SIZES

In the pattern I give 3 sizes based on your foot circumference around the widest part of the foot (more or less where your foot bends when you tip-toe).

Size S (small): 20-21 cm / 8”
Size M (medium): 22-24 cm / 9”
Size L (large): 25-26 cm / 10”

These sizes are based only on the width of your foot and not the length. To work out the length of the sock, measure your foot: place a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall and put your bare foot on top, also against the wall. Put a mark where your longest toe ends and measure from the edge of the sheet of paper to that mark. Make a note of that number as you’ll need it when you start knitting the heel.

You can also use the shoe size conversion table given in the pattern to find out the foot length in inches or centimetres for each size.
