Folixa is a cowl pattern that allows you to practise several brioche techniques: one-colour, two-colour, syncopated and, finally, brioche lace. In this pattern I assume no prior knowledge of this technique so I give step-by-step instructions, including where to place the different colour yarns at the beginning and end of each round, which can be tricky to start with.

Folixa uses two colours of fingering yarn: one solid or semi-solid and one variegated – perfect for those beautiful variegated hand-dyed skeins.

  • 3.5mm (US4) circular needles, 40cm / 16" long
  • Stitch marker, tapestry needle

YARN

Two fingering-weight skeins, ideally one solid or semi-solid and one variegated, although this is not necessary.

  • Colour A (variegated): 50g (200m). I used Life in the Long Grass Fine Sock, colour: Paintbox (pink)
  • Colour B (solid): 50g (200m). I used Town End Alpacas Sock, colour: 201 Navy (bue)

SIZES

Only size (adult)

GAUGE

Before blocking: 19 stitches and 27 rounds in 10cm/4in in brioche stitch After blocking: 19 stitches and 20 rounds in 10cm/4in.

Gauge is not important in this pattern but it may affect the amount of yarn you need.Note: to measure gauge in brioche stitch, count the knit columns as one stitch and the purl columns as another stitch. Count each ‘v’ in the knit columns as one round.

DIMENSIONES

The final dimensions of the cowls (after blocking) are 28cm / 11" wide x 42 cm / 16.5" long.
