The Cobijeru socks are knitted from the toe up and feature a small gusset and a German short row heel. They have a simple pattern made with slipped and twisted stitches. You can use one main colour for the whole sock or work each pattern repeat with a different colour – perfect to use up sock yarn scraps. The pattern offers two options for the length: ankle or mid-calf length. I have included links to videos that will help you with the techniques you need to make the toe and heel.

MATERIALS

  • 2.25mm (US 1) circular needles, either 80 cm / 32” long (if you use the magic loop method), or 23 cm / 9” long (if you prefer short circulars) or DPNs (double-pointed needles). If you use short circular needles you’ll still need a long circular needle or DPNs for casting on and the toe increases until you have enough stitches to work comfortably on a shorter needle.
  • 3 markers (one of them removable), tapestry needle.

YARN

Fingering or light fingering weight yarn (400–425 m / 437–465 yards per 100 g). I used LaMiel Aster Sock (75% merino and 25% nylon).

The amount of yarn you’ll need will depend on your sock and shoe size. As an example, I used 180 m / 197 yards of the MC for a size M (see below), UK5 / EU38 shoe size for the mid-calf socks and 40 m / 44 yards for each of the colours for the ankle socks.

Mid-calf socks:

  • Main colour (MC): 170–200 m / 186–218 yards. Colorway: Kaladium (variegated).
  • Contrasting colour (CC): 65–70 m / 71–77 yards.Colorway: Atomic pink (pink).

Ankle socks with stripes:

  • Contrasting colour (CC) for toe, heel and cuff:
    65–70 m / 71–77 yards. Colorway: Eucalyptus.
  • Colour 1 (C1): 12–13 m / 13–14 yards per pattern repeat. I needed 2 pattern repeats per sock for size M and UK5/ EU38 shoe size. Colorway: Apricot.
  • Colour 2 (C2): 12–13 m / 13–14 yards per pattern repeat. I needed 2 pattern repeats per sock for size M and UK5/ EU38 shoe size. Colorway: Mint Gala.
  • Colour 3 (C3): 12–13 m / 13–14 yards per pattern repeat. I needed 2 pattern repeats per sock for size M and UK5/ EU38 shoe size. Colorway: Pink ballerina.

GAUGE

8 stitches and 12 rows in 2.5 cm / 1”.

SIZES

In the pattern I give 3 sizes based on your foot circumference around the widest part of the foot (more or less where your foot bends when you tip-toe).

Size S (small): 20–21 cm / 8”
Size M (medium): 22–24 cm / 9”
Size L (large): 25–26 cm / 10”

These sizes are based only on the width of your foot and not the length. To work out the length of the sock, measure your foot: place a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall and put your bare foot on top, also against the wall. Put a mark where your longest toe ends and measure from the edge of the sheet of paper to that mark. Make a note of that number as you’ll need it when you start knitting the heel.

If you are making socks for someone else whose foot you can’t measure but you know their shoe size, use the shoe size conversion chart in the pattern to find out their foot length in inches or centimetres.
